This month My Home Town visits Black Diamond, one of the few historic mining towns in Washington to survive and thrive into the 21st century. Now Black Diamond is on the verge of a period of unprecedented growth. Will this tiny community be able to retain it’s historic character as it doubles or triples in size?

Franklin and Black Diamond were neighboring mining towns in the late 1800s. Today Franklin no longer exists, but Black Diamond has come into the 21st Century going and growing strong. Bill Kombol, grandson of one of the early mining families, shared this story with us: “At that point in time both Franklin and black Diamond were populated by a number of immigrants from European Countries and in order to keep communicating to the miners the danger that some old mines presented, signs were made up in about 16 different languages of the areas and countries those miners would have come from. It was sometime in the early 1970’s that my father actually found a copy of this sign and its now at the Black Diamond Historical Museum for visitors to see.”

We visit the historic Black Diamond Bakery where this same oven has been in service for over one hundred years - and the doughnuts, made fresh daily are delicious and so are the pies and the bread - we tell all about it.

Ginger Passarelli has traveled to Mississipi seven times to cook thousands of meals for Katrina survivors and the rescue workers who continue to battle their way back to normalcy. Mama Passarelli and her brigade of Soup Ladies are on their way back this Thanksgiving. You’ll want to hear her inspiring story and see how they do it. On the right, a peek inside Baker Street Books, one of Black Diamond’s best kept secrets.

mayorbotts
Howard Botts, Mayor of Black Diamond, has lived in Black Diamond all his life. He takes us on a sentimental journey of the changes his home town has seen over the last eight decades.
